Tonight is the 89th annual Academy Awards and it seems like the focus will be on anything but the films themselves. For the first time since 2003, when the ceremony went on despite the start of the war in Iraq, the political climate is probably going to be front and centre this year. Despite, all that I am now going to make my best guess on what films will be walking away with awards this evening.
While there are many people rooting for Moonlight, which just swept the Independent Spirit Awards, I am fairly certain that La La Land is going to rule the night tonight, especially with it being an escapist film in a dark world.
Directing: Damien Chazelle, La La Land
See above.
Writing (Original Screenplay): La La Land
Yeah, I’m calling a La La Land sweep
Writing (Adapted Screenplay): Moonlight
This will probably be one of the few that Moonlight wins.
Aside from the controversy surrounding his personal life, Casey Affleck has won pretty much every pre-Oscar award, so it’s safe to say that he’ll be getting it here.
Actor in a Supporting Role: Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
This is probably the most difficult of the acting categories to pick, so I’ll just go with the one everybody is rooting for.
Actress in a Leading Role: Emma Stone, La La Land
As great as it would be for Isabelle Huppert to pull an upset, I believe that this one will probably go to Emma Stone.
Actress in a Supporting Role: Viola Davis. Fences
There are many deserving performances in this category, but I’ll go with the performance that has already won a number of awards.
That wraps up my predictions in the major categories, here are the rest:
Short Film (Animated): Piper
Short Film (Live Action): Ennemis Intérieur (Enemies Within)
Music (Original Score): La La Land, Justin Hurwitz
Music (Original Song): “City of Stars,” La La Land
Animated Feature Film: Zootopia
Production Design: La La Land
Cinematography: La La Land
Costume Design: La La Land

Nothing real special happened during my first volunteer shift, which nearly consisted entirely of Press & Industry screenings. The most of those press screens was definitely that for the Belgium film Unspoken (pictured), which had not only the five assigned volunteers, but at least three representatives for the film, who gave out promotional materials and…
The Canadian Screen Awards was presented last night with the big winner of the night being Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, which won six awards, including Best Picture and Director. The runner-up was Race, which won four awards, including Best Actor for Stephan James. The awards also solidified the fact that Tatiana…
This weekend will see the release of Split, which is the latest film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan has been making films for nearly 25 year now, beginning with his self-financed 1992 debut film Praying with Anger. However, most would know the director for both the surprise success of The Sixth Sense in 1999, as…
Even though film is my main pastime, I still occasionally check out Toronto’s bustling theatre scene. Usually I am attracted to productions that fit my genre-loving tastes, such as Evil Dead: The Musical and Ghost Stories. In the same vein, this evening I checked out Night of the Living Dead Live, which is a stage…
We are only a couple days away from celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Over the last two decades, the festival has steadily grown and is now arguably the second biggest film festival in Toronto, next to TIFF. This will be my third year attending the film festival and…
James Rolfe, best known by his webseries persona “The Angry Video Game Nerd” posted a video on his website Cinemassacre, which he described as a “non-review” of the upcoming reboot of Ghostbusters. Before I go any further, I should disclose that I haven’t watched the entire six minute and thirty second video, with me having…
