TIFF13: Vanguard Highlights
Over the past few years, TIFF’s Vanguard programme has been developing into a more mature companion to the Midnight Madness programme. While many of the films in this programme can be classified as genre films, they also have tend to have a bit of an art house vibe to them. That said, this year’s Vanguard line-up, which was announced yesterday, features a number of high profile film selections that would have also felt right at home in Midnight Madness. There are definitely many films in this line-up that will end up on my festival shortlist. Here are the highlights. Borgman – Alex van Warmerdam, The Netherlands/Belgium/Denmark
A dark fable about a sinister presence that invades modern day suburbia. The Fake – Yeon Sang-ho, Korea
This animated Korean film looks be quite well done, with a somewhat realistic look and feel. Horns – Alexandre Aja, USA
This is also known as the film where Daniel Radcliffe sports devil horns. However, I am familiar with the film, in how it is an adaptation of the novel by Joe Hill (who is the son of Steven King). Since Radcliffe’s involvement automatically makes the film a hot ticket item, it is unknown whether I’ll be able to see the film at the festival. Proxy – Zack Parker, USA
A woman gets support from a support group after a home invasions, but finds that everything is now how it seems. The Sacrament – Ti West,USA
With films like House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, Ti West has developed into one of the must-see indie horror filmmakers. As such, I am quite excited to see to see his latest film. The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears – Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani, Belgium/France/Luxembourg
The mysterious circumstances around a missing woman is at the centre of this homage to 1970s giallo films. And those are my Vanguard highlights. There should be one more post later tonight detailing the films in TIFF’s documentary programme.
