Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of January 30, 2009

Taken posterDemonstrating how people like a good action/thriller along with their comedies, Taken topped the weekend box office with an estimated gross of $24.6M. This ends the two week reign of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, which dropped to second with an estimated $14M.

It should be noted that Paul Blart is only about $20M away from becoming the first film of the year (that wasn’t released in December) to pass the $100M point. It will be interesting to keep track on when that will happen.

As for the other new releases, The Uninvited opened in third place with an estimated $10.5M and New In Town opened in eighth place with an estimated $6.8M.

And that’s the box office thoughts for this week.
