A young woman begins to unravel after the birth of her child in Die My Love. Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jackson (Robert Pattinson) are a young couple who move into the house once owned by Jackson's uncle. As Jackson is frequently absent, Grace plans to write a novel during her time alone at the house. However, Grace's demeanour changes following the birth of the couple's first child. Grace struggles to adjust to domestic life, even with support from her mother-in-law, Pam (Sissy Spacek), who is still adjusting to the recent death of her husband, Harry (Nick Nolte). Grace also finds herself growing apart from Jackson, resulting in her beginning a liaison with mysterious biker Karl (LaKeith Stanfield). Despite being reassured by friends that "everyone goes a little loopy" after their first child, Jackson becomes increasingly concerned about Grace's erratic behaviour. Die My Love Synopsis Die My Love is a relationship drama/thriller co-written and directed by Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), based on the novel of the same name by Ariana Harwicz. The film opens with a static shot of the couple, Grace and Jackson, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, entering the leaf-covered house they inherited after Jackson's uncle committed suicide. Sometime later, the couple are now caring for their infant son. With Jackson frequently away on business and suspected of having affairs, Grace finds herself unsatisfied sexually while staying home to care for her son. Grace finds herself unable to get back into her writing, and apart from caring for her baby, every other aspect of Grace's life begins to fall apart. It soon reaches the point where Jackson believes that Grace needs serious help. My Thoughts on Die My Love Die My Love is a very extreme depiction of postpartum depression, as Jennifer Lawrence's Grace experiences a major downward spiral in her life after having her first child. In some ways, some parallels can be drawn between Die My Love and 2017's Mother!, minus the religious allegories of the latter. This includes the visual of a forest fire symbolizing Grace's crumbling psyche. While it isn't hard to decipher that Die My Love is a film about Grace suffering from postpartum depression and a mental breakdown, the film also depicts the character as an unreliable narrator of sorts, with it difficult to tell whether some of Grace's interactions are actually happening or in her head. Specifically, this relates to a supposed affair Grace has with LaKeith Stanfield's Karl, though Stanfield is only in the film fleetingly and isn't given any lines of dialogue, making the viewer wonder if Karl is real. Robert Pattinson also takes a backseat for much of the film as Jackson, who is often seen from Grace's perspective. One of the main sources of conflict between the two is when Jackson gets a dog that Grace ends up hating and refuses to care for. Let's just say, it didn't take me long to figure out the dog's fate. In some ways, Die My Love is emblematic of the more mature career choices of both Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, both of whom achieved stardom through young-adult franchises. Lawrence, in particular, who arguably peaked with a Best Actress Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook at the age of 22, has been more sparse with her roles later, with Die My Love being her first film since the 2023 romantic comedy No Hard Feelings. That said, Die My Love is an art film that is not for mainstream consumption, which only mothers may truly understand the meaning of.
