For its 11th edition, the Canadian Film Fest moved from its previous home of the Royal Cinema to the more centralized downtown location of the Socialbank Theatre, with the festival also extending its length from four days to five. This year’s edition of the festival featured 10 features and 19 shorts, showcasing the up and coming independant filmmakers in the Canadian film industry. Things are only looking up for this festival, which is sure to continue growing in the years to come.
Here are the favourite films I saw at the Canadian Film Fest this year, followed by a listing of the official award winners.
The 2017 jury consisted of three professionals from different areas of the industry including Alex Boothby (owner of Gang Green Productions), Christine Bujis (Director of Divorce Photographer) and Tim Smythe-Bishop (President, TSB Consulting). They selected the following awards:

Happy New Year. It is now that time of the year, where I list my favourite films of the year. As is always is the case, there some films (i.e. There Will Be Blood) that I haven’t been able to see before the end of year. Now for the list. 10. Knocked Up This has…
This week’s big release is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (also on Blu-Ray), which is one of the rare films to get an immediate release via The Criterion Collection. I thought that this was a wonderful film that gives the message that you have to live your life the best way you possibly can….
Another edition of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival is in the books. This was my seventh year attending the film festival, so I can undoubtedly be considered a veteran at this point. While my attendance at the Fantasia Film Festival for the last couple years resulted in me seeing a number of films in…
Here I am again, posting about the fate of a cinema that I have loved so much. The resurrection of the Humber Cinema has been a very rough ride, particularly involving the very nasty feud over the management of the theatre. Despite all of that, the Humber has flourished over the last five years or…
The Toronto After Dark Film Festival has announced the line-up for this year’s festival, which runs from October 17-25 at the Scotiabank Theatre in downtown Toronto. Somewhat interesting about this year’s line-up is how each night is programmed with a different theme. While this isn’t the first time Toronto After Dark has done this (Zombie…
It is almost a “battle of the sexes” this weekend at the Box Office. The big release this week is the very female-centred movie version of the popular HBO TV show Sex and the City. Its only opponent is the (traditionally) male-centred horror film The Strangers. While it can be an easy guess on who…
