Is the summer movie season starting early?

This Friday, the Rodriguez/Tarantino double feature Grindhouse is released to theatres.

One month ago, it was the graphic novel adaptation 300.

In the past, movies like these would have been released in the summer movie season between May and August.

Now it seems that studios and releasing these movies early to avoid bogging down the summer months.

This isn’t the first year this has happened either. Last year, we had V for Vendetta (definitely a movie that could be released in the summer) released in March and 2005 saw the successful April release of Sin City.

So, are spring movie seasons the new summer or are studios just jumping the gun to avoid their films getting bogged down? Either way, it does make for some entertaining weekends.
