Tipping Point
The aftermath of a police shooting is commented on through street art and spoken word in Night Watches Us. On August 17, 2018, Nicolas Gibbs, a 24-year-old black Montreal man, was gunned down by police while having a mental breakdown. Through a mix of music, dance, and spoken word, the memory of Nicholas is paid tribute.
Night Watches Us Synopsis
Night Watches Us is a hybrid documentary directed by Stefan Verna. The film delves into the systemic racism that led to Montreal police shooting 24-year-old Nicolas Gibbs in 2018. The film features interviews with Nicolas’ mother, son, and nephew, while also featuring hip hop and spoken word sequences in tribute.

My Thoughts on Night Watches Us
Night Watches Us can be seen as a mix of documentary and performance. The film also acts as a commentary on police brutality, systemic racism, and dealing with people with mental illness. However, the very brief 42-minute length of Night Watches Us doesn’t leave much time to allow the messages of the film to truly sink in.
