the 2014 Golden Globe Nominees
Well, the Awards season is upon us once again, with the announcement of this year’s Golden Globe nominees. As you may know, I’ve fallen out of favour with the Golden Globes in the last few years, since they seem to occupy their own little world and are no longer really the Oscar predictor they once were. Of course, there’s always exceptions, such as last year when many of the winners went on to win their corresponding Oscars. Will this year’s Golden Globes follow last year’s success and be a major Oscar predictor or will it go back down the path of being a complete joke, choosing completely random winners. We’ll find out on January 12. In the meantime, here are my obligatory random thoughts on the nominees:

I’ve actually seen, or will see, most of the Best Picture nominees. The films that sick out the most are the nominations for Rush and Philomena for Best Picture – Drama.

Best Picture – Musical/Comedy remains the most random of Golden Globe categories. The obvious drama Inside Llewyn Davis probably got nominated in the category, solely for its folk music soundtrack. As for the rest of the nominees, I don’t think there is a sole pure comedy in there.

No real surprises in the the acting categories. I do like that Greta Gerwig got a nomination for Frances Ha.

With no Pixar nomination, Frozen seems like a shoe-in for Best Animated Film

Speaking of animated films, even thought it did not get nominated in the animated category, I do like seeing a Best Foreign Language Film nomination for Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song The Wind Rises. Also, this will probably be the only awards show you’ll see a nomination for (likely winner) Blue is the Warmest Colour, since it did not open early enough to qualify for Oscar contention.

I think its been a while since there has been such varied Best Song nominations. I’m rooting for “Let it Go” from Frozen (with the U2 song being a distant second).
