the Oscar Nominees
Avid Media Composer - Right For You
The Oscar nominations were announced this morning and it is time that I have my random thoughts:
- In what can be considered a personal achievement involving my choice of films, this year marks the very first year I’ve seen all five Best Picture nominees (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and Slumdog Millionaire) BEFORE the nominees were announced. That can be considered an impossible task and it was something I was hoping to do for at least ten years now.
- That said, I am disappointed that the Academy didn’t give a nomination to, my favourite film of 2008, The Wrestler.
- As for all the people who would be complaining that The Dark Knight didn’t get nominated, I have to say that pigs will fly around the world fifty times before the academy gives a best picture nomination to an action film. At least Heath Ledger got his supporting actor nomination.
- The biggest surprise involving the acting nominations is probably Richard Jenkin’s bect actor nomination for The Visitor.
- Aftering sweeping the Golden Globes, Slumdog Millionaire is second in the Oscar race with ten nominations (behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’s thirteen). This includes two of three Best Song nominations (the third being Peter Gabriel’s song from Wall-E).
- Benjamin Button received the Best Make-Up nomination (that’s a relief)
- One day after I saw it, The Class did indeed receive a Best Foreign Film nomination. Walz with Bashir is the only other familiar film in the category.
- Milk is the only Best Picture nomination with an original screenplay nomination. The rest received adapted screenplay nominations.
Well, I think that is all I have to say about the nominees for now. Like last year, I will do a week of special Oscar columns to prepare for the ceremony on February 22.
Until then.
