Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of July 18, 2009

DarkKnightPosterAs expected, The Dark Knight ruled this week with a record breaking weekend. Let see by how much shall we?

  1. The Dark Knight – $155M
  2. Mamma Mia! – $27.6M
  3. Hancock – $14M
  4. Journey to the Center of the Earth – $11.9M
  5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army – $10M
  6. WALL·E – $9.81M
  7. Space Chimps – $7.35M
  8. Wanted (2008) – $123M
  9. Get Smart – $4.08M
  10. Kung Fu Panda – $1.75M

With its total of $155M, The Dark Knight beat he $151M made by Spider-Man 3 last year. This definitely makes the film poised to become the biggest hit of the year and I can’t wait to see the film this evening.

The other major new film, Mamma Mia!, opened with a decent $27.6, considering its competition.

The worst new opening of the week goes to the animated film Space Chimps, which opened in seventh place with only $7.35M.

Last week’s top film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army dropped way down to fifth place with only $10M. Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D dropped one spot to forth place with $11.9 M.

Now out of the top ten, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made another $970K, which brings its total to $312.5M, which is just a couple million away from Iron Man, which currently holds $314M.

And that’s the box office thoughts for this week.
