Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of May 1, 2009

XMenOriginsWolverine PosterThe $85.1M number one gross for X-Men Origins: Wolverine proves that comic book films still do good business despite mixed (at best) reviews. It’s also close to a number that I am sure the makers of Watchmen wanted that film to receive when it was released two month ago.

Rounding out the figures for the week, last week’s top film, Obsessed, dropped down to third place with a gross of $12.1M, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past opened in second with a gross of $15.4M, and the animated film Battle for Terra opened way down at twelfth place with a gross of $1.1M.

And that’s my box office thoughts for this week.
