Oscars 2020 – Best Picture Profiles – 1917

1917

In the days leading up to the 2020 Academy Awards, I will be profiling one of the nine Best Picture nominees

Read my Review

Number of Nominations: 10

Notable Awards So Far:

  • Golden Globes – Best Picture – Drama
  • Director’s Guild of America – Outstanding Directorial Achievement
  • BAFTAS – Best Director, Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Sound, Best Achievement in Visual Effects

the Film’s Chances:

It has been exactly two decades since Sam Mendes hit it out of the park with his debut feature American Beauty, which won five Oscars in 2000, including Best Director and Best Picture. 1917 is his first time even getting a nomination since that time and the recent Golden Globes win suggests that 1917‘s Best Picture odds are a relatively good one. However, I also believe this year’s Best Picture race is quite a crowded field and there’s a chance that 1917 might end up with “also-ran” status, though I would be surprised if it didn’t at least get an Oscar for Roger Deakins’ cinematography.
