We are just a few hours away, so it’s time to get my Oscar predictions out of the way.
Best Picture – Parasite
While this prediction is a bit of a gamble, I have my fingers crossed that this will be the year that the Academy Awards finally crosses the language barrier.
Directing – Bong Joon-Ho, Parasite
This one is a little more certain than the Best Picture win, but this is also a bit of a gamble.
If Jojo Rabbit wins for anything, it will be for the screenplay.
Actor in a Leading Role – Joaquin Pheonix, Joker
This win has been all for a sure thing for quite some time.
Actor in a Supporting Role – Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
While I would argue that Brad Pitt is one of the leads in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, his performance was definitely one of the high points of that film.
Actress in a Leading Role – Renee Zellweger, Judy
While the thoughts of Judy as a whole have somewhat cooled over the months, the Academy always loves to celebrate both a comeback story and playing another famous person on screen.
Actress in a Supporting Role – Laura Dern, Marriage Story
This is another win that is all but certain.
Well, those are my predictions for the major categories. Here are the rest (with there being a lot more guesswork this year than previous years):
Music (Original Song): “In the Unknown” from Frozen 2
Animated Feature Film: Klaus
Production Design: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Cinematography: 1917
Costume Design: Little Women
Sean Patrick Kelly
Sean Patrick Kelly is a self-described über-geek, who has been an avid film lover for all his life. He graduated from York University in 2010 with an honours B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies and he likes to believe he knows what he’s talking about when he writes about film (despite occasionally going on pointless rants).

It has been a rough few days for me personally, so I had decided to forego making predictions for last night’s Golden Globes Awards. It ultimately turned out that I wouldn’t be able to watch the ceremony anyways, since my neighborhood experienced a blackout, which lasted well into the night. Anyways the big winner of…
This year’s Golden Globes was as tough to call as any. We are still very early in the awards season and there was not yet any clear frontrunner. However, at the end of the night, it turned out to be Boyhood that was the big winner, which should set the stage for the awards season…
It’s that time already, eh? Nothing really surprised me with this year’s Golden Globe nominations. I would say the biggest surprise would be the nomination of Thank You for Smoking in the “Best Picture, Comedy or Musical” category, since it came out REALLY early in the year and I pretty much forgot about it. I’ll make…
The Canadian Screen Awards was presented last night with the big winner of the night being Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, which won six awards, including Best Picture and Director. The runner-up was Race, which won four awards, including Best Actor for Stephan James. The awards also solidified the fact that Tatiana…
The 80th Annual Academy Awards are this coming Sunday and I am going to make posts all week to celebrate. Tomorrow, we will start things off with my history with the Oscars, where I will look back at when I started watching and I will tally how many of my Best Picture predictions were correct….
We are one week award from the Oscars and it is time for my week of special posts. This year I thought I would take a look back at five of my favourite films that were nominated for Best Picture, but never won. So, here is how the week long set of classic thoughts columns…
