The Pros and Cons of Online Renting

I was just reading how, the online rental company, Netflix‘s goal is put traditional video rental stores out of business.

You know, I can see the advantages of renting films online.  With a large selection, you will be guaranteed to find the film you are looking for.  And the lack of late fees or due dates is definitely a big plus.

However, according to the website, the big catch with all of this is that you get your movies within 1 business day (i.e. weekday).  Now, I don’t know about other people, but I usually like renting my films for the weekends.  So, using Netflix’s system, I would probably have to place the order on Wednesday or Thursday to get the film(s) on a Friday.  What if I don’t decide to rent a film until Saturday?  Do I really want to wait until Monday or Tuesday for a film, when I can just walk into Blockbuster and get it right away?

Yes, I agree that online rental sites are a good idea (especially for renting older films that I no longer on the traditional store’s shelves).  However, traditional stores offer immediacy that online stores can’t offer.

So, Netflix can go on and on about how they want to put video stores out of business.  In my opinion, there will always be room for Blockbuster.
