Alone Across the Arctic

Alone Across the Arctic

🍁

An explorer documents his 4000km solo trek across Canada’s arctic wilderness in Alone Across the Arctic. Adam Shoalts is a wilderness explorer and author, who on May 13, 2017 sets of on journey alone across the Canadian arctic. Beginning his journey along the Dempster Highway in the Yukon, Adam prepares to travel an estimated 4000 km to Baker Lake, Nunavut.

Alone Across the Arctic is a documentary directed by Francis Luta, though much of the film is done solo by Adam Shoalts during his journey in the arctic. Adam mentions at one point that he did his first solo wilderness trip at the age of 13, so adventure is definitely in his blood. As Adam travels through the largest wilderness in North America, he makes small milestones as he reaches locations such as Great Bear Lake and even finds the ruins of Fort Confidence from the 19th century. However, there are also many challenges on this journey, including icy water, white rapids, hundreds of mosquitos, and of course bears.

Alone Across the Arctic is a breathtaking wilderness documentary that reminds somewhat of old reality TV series Survivorman, which also focused on someone filming himself alone in the wilderness. It definitely takes a lot of endurance to survive with only a canoe, tent, and a backpack of supplies that are restocked only once during the 100+ day journey. While I personally would not be able to survive such a journey myself, Alone Across the Arctic still makes a fascinating documentation of a man alone with nature.

Alone Across the Arctic airs Friday, May 22, 2020, at 9:00 pm as part of the 2020 Canadian Film Fest on Super Channel Fuse
