The story behind Rubik’s Cube is told in 20 Moves. Invented by Hungarian Erno Rubik and originally intended as a teaching tool, the puzzle that would become known as Rubik’s Cube was discovered at a German toy fair by holocaust survivor Tom Kremer. Sold by the Ideal Toy Company, the incredibly difficult three dimensional puzzle became a huge hit and inspired mathematicians and artists alike.
There probably isn’t a single person around today, who hasn’t played with a Rubik’s Cube at some point in their life. The puzzle has the seemingly unsolvable goal of having all six sides be the same colour, with there being over three billion possible combinations. However, the secret is all in mathematics, with the best solutions for the cube requiring only about 20 moves. This has lead to the create of competitions, which record the fastest solving times, and the cube has also inspired artists to create elaborate mosaics.
20 Moves is a very interesting documentary about the history of a toy that many of us now take for granted. It is probably not that widely known that the cube was created by an inventor in communist Hungary and discovered by a Hungarian refuge at a German toy fair. While the Rubik’s Cube fad only lasted a brief amount of time, it has solidified its place in pop culture, with it being one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Overall, this is a recommended documentary for all puzzle lovers.
