Dicktatorship

Dicktatorship

Two filmmakers examine the history of male chauvinistic behaviour in Italy in Dicktatorship. Throughout its history, Italian men have often been associated with the “Latin Lover” macho stereotype, with the country’s gender roles having been heavily influenced by Musolini. On the eve of their marriage, and explore and debate the origins of male chauvinistic behaviour throughout the country.

Best known for their award-winning 2011 documentary Italy: Love It, or Leave It, filmmakers Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi leads us on an examination of the connection between the Three Ps: penis, power, and politics. The two take a close look at Italy’s typically male-dominated society, which has often been bolstered by macho stereotypes. This has resulted in a culture, where only 48% of women work and men maintain political control in the country.

As the title of the film suggests, Dicktatorship is a documentary that features many puns in regards to the male anatomy. However, the lighthearted tone of them film is used to make its topic of male chauvinistic behaviour a little more digestible. The film describes both historical and societal reasons for Italy’s male-centric society and altogether I would say that Dicktatorship is an interesting piece of infotainment.
