The murderous identity thief tries to stay one step ahead of her vengeful victim in Influencers. CW (Cassandra Naud) has been living in hiding in the south of France, where she has entered into a relationship with Diane (Lisa Delamar). A trip to the countryside is disrupted when CW and Diane lose their room to British influencer Charlotte Smith (Georgina Campbell). This results in some of CW’s bad habits resurfacing.
Meanwhile, CW’s escaped victim, Madison White (Emily Tennant), finds herself unable to return to a normal life, as many have blamed her for the murders that CW committed. This results in Madison tracking CW’s social media trail to Bali, Indonesia. During her search, Madison crosses paths with Jacob (Jonathan Whitesell), an obnoxious male-rights streamer, who lives with his alt-right influencer girlfriend Ariana (Veronica Long). When Jacob recognizes CW from a photo shown to him by Madison, he tries to see if she is really a psychotic murderer. Now knowing that Madison is on her trail, CW decides to manipulate Jacob to stop her once and for all.
Influencers Synopsis
Influencers is the semi-standalone follow-up to 2022’s Influencer, seeing the return of writer/director Kurtis David Harder and stars Cassandra Naud and Emily Tennant. Naud’s psychotic identity thief, CW, was last seen stranded on an island in Thailand, as Tennant’s Madison White, the influencer whose identity CW stole, makes her escape. However, it was not a happy ending for Madison, who was charged with the murders CW committed, which, despite later being dropped, resulted in her being ostracized on social media and the victim of multiple stalkers.
After learning about a similar incident involving British influencer Charlotte Smith, played by Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), Madison finds a way to track CW to Indonesia, where she is currently hiding. However, it isn’t long until CW learns that Madison is on her trail. This results in her playing the victim, as she makes right-wing streamer Jacob her next target.
My Thoughts on Influencers
Influencers ups the ante from the original 2022 film by further developing Cassandra Naud’s villain of CW, whose real name is revealed in the film, but I’ve opted not to share it in this review. It becomes apparent that CW is more than just an identity thief, as she shows espionage-level skills, including owning multiple passports and having expert-level hacking skills. Even though she can still be considered the villain of Influencers, as she intends to once again frame the vengeful Madison for her crimes, CW is also positioned as more of an anti-hero whom the viewers can root for.
The reason for CW’s antihero status in Influencers comes from her current mark, Jacob, who is representative of the worst aspects of toxic masculinity. Despite claiming to be faithful to his fellow influencer girlfriend Ariana, Jacob’s dude-bro best friend Cameron (Dylan Playfair) keeps encouraging Jacob to play the field. This is what results in Jacob crossing paths with both Madison and CW, as he becomes a pawn in their feud.
Even if you haven’t seen the original film, Influencers catches viewers up enough for this to be enjoyed as a standalone film. CW has become the signature role for Alberta-born actor Cassandra Naud, who can switch between making the character sympathetic, conniving, or full-out psychotic. In fact, CW going on an all-out rampage in the concluding moments of Influencers, makes for a highly satisfying ending that makes me want to see more of this character.
