Motherly – Blood in the Snow 2021

🍁

A woman and her daughter find their home invaded by a vengeful couple in Motherly. Kate (Lora Burke) is a woman living in an isolated farmhouse with her daughter Beth (Tessa Kozma). The two are under witness protection, under the supervision of police officer Hal (Colin Paradine), following the murder of a young girl, for which Kate’s husband Brad got sent to prison. However, on the night of Beth’s 9th birthday, the house is broken into by the murdered girl’s parents Mary (Kristen MacCulloch) and Lewis (Nick Smyth), who adamantly believe that Kate is the true murderer.

Motherly is a home invasion thriller from co-writer and director Craig David Wallace (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil). We are introduced to the mother-daughter duo of Kate and Beth as they try to live out some sort of normal existence in witness protection, while Kate tries in vain to eke out pages of a memoir. However, their solitude is disrupted by the arrival of vengeful parents Mary and Lewis, who believe that Kate lied on the stand to send her husband to prison and cover up the true murderer of Mary and Lewis’ daughter.

While perhaps merely coincidental, Motherly is a film that hearkens back to some of the previous roles of star Lora Burke, including 2017’s Poor Agnes and last year’s For the Sake of Vicious, which also happened to co-star Nick Smyth. With a premise built around the duo questions of what would you do to protect your child and what would you do if someone harmed your child, Motherly ends up being a somewhat solid home invasion thriller, even if it does end up being somewhat predictable where the plot ends up.

Motherly is airing on Super Channel Fuse October 30, 2021, at 9:05 PM as part of the 2021 Blood in the Snow Film Festival
