Bodysnatching aliens try to make a home for each other on planet Earth in The Becomers. An alien forced to evacuate their planet lands on Earth and takes the form of first Francesca (Isabel Alamin) and later Carol (Molly Plunk). “Carol” is eventually reunited with their lover, who takes the form of Carol’s husband George (Mike Lopez) and together they try to make a life for themselves in their new home. However, they soon find themselves entwined in the kidnapping of the Governor of Illinois (Keith Kelly) by an anti-government cult calling themselves the Cult of the White Circle.

The Becomers Synopsis

The Becomers is a surreal sci-fi comedy written and directed by Zach Clark (Little Sister). Featuring backstory narration by Russell Mael of the band Sparks, the film tells the story of two aliens lovers, known in their native form as just Y and X, who win a lottery to evacuate from their planet to Earth, hiding their glowing alien eyes with either sunglasses or contact lenses. The plot primarily focuses on Y and the various forms they take to be reunited with X and start a new life on Earth.

My Thoughts on The Becomers

The Becomers sets the stage for its darkly humorous sci-fi story, when Y takes on the form of the pregnant Francesca and ends up casually tossing her baby into a trash fire. This is the first of many weird and gross out moments in the film, including the use of acidic vomit to dissolve the bodies of the alien’s human hosts and probably one of the most cringe-inducing sex scenes you would ever see. Throw in the very ridiculous cult shenanigans of the second half and The Becomers ends up being a film that may not be for everyone, but is full of much hilarity.

Sean Patrick Kelly

Sean Patrick Kelly is a self-described über-geek, who has been an avid film lover for all his life. He graduated from York University in 2010 with an honours B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies and he likes to believe he knows what he’s talking about when he writes about film (despite occasionally going on pointless rants).
