A 30-something woman balances her life with her multiple BDSM relationships in The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. During the day, Ann (Joanna Arnow) works an increasingly directionless job at a real estate company or gets together with her Jewish family. However, at night, partakes in master/slave relationships with multiple partners, the most regular being the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). Eventually, Ann decides to move on to a more conventional relationship with the caring Chris (Babak Tafti).

The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed Synopsis

The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed is the directorial debut from writer and director Joanna Arnow, who also stars in the lead role of Ann. The film is probably best described as a Millennial BDSM comedy, with the film being divided into five chapters named for Ann’s various partners. Ann’s many BDSM scenes are contrasted with her quite menial daily life, including a job at a company that just went through a merger, as well as interactions with Ann’s parents and sister.

My Thoughts on The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed

The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed is a film that hearkens back to the early work of Lena Dunham, such as 2010’s Tiny Furniture and the 2012 to 2017 HBO series Girls. Like Dunham, Joanna Arnow isn’t afraid to engage in gratuitous nudity, with it not being an exaggeration to say that Arnow’s character Ann appears naked for at least half the film. Personally, I connected more with Ann’s more conventional courtship of Chris, which includes her at one point belting out a number from Les Miserables. Ultimately, The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed is not really a film for the prudish but is still an honest look at modern relationships.
