A woman wakes from a coma to a life that is unfamiliar to her in The Free Fall. After witnessing a murder-suicide involving her parents, Sara (Andrea Londo) goes into a coma after supposedly slitting her wrists in the bathtub. She wakes up sometime later and is greeted by Nick (Shawn Ashmore), a man claiming to be Sara’s husband. With no previous memory of neither Nick nor the housekeeper Rose (Jane Badler), Sara begins to question whether they are truly looking out for her wellbeing.
The Free Fall is a horror film by director Adam Stilwell about an amnesiac woman named Sara, with no previous memory of her supposed husband Nick, a man who claims to be concerned for her recovery after a suicide attempt. However, it’s also possible that Nick is gaslighting Sara, particularly after he forbids contact with her sister Julie (Elizabeth Cappuccino) and a supposed friend named Tom (Michael Berry Jr.), who shows up at Sara’s house. However, as Sara slowly recovers her memory, the truth turns out to be a whole lot more horrifying.
On the surface, The Free Fall seems like a fairly straightforward tale of gaslighting, with Shawn Ashmore doing a great job at portraying Nick as someone who appears to be concerned about Sara, but also gives off a somewhat sinister demeanour, particularly when he is shown endlessly typing at night. Ultimately, The Free Fall is all about the film’s third act reveal, which you’ll either end up going along with or rolling your eyes at. I ended up going with the former.
