My shift started off with my first position inside the theatre. The screening was for the Canadian film A Gun to the Head, which I thought was decent enough that I didn’t mind standing through it.
However, my busiest position today was manning the P&I screening for the film Lebanon, fresh from winning the Golden Lion at the Venace Film Festival.
The was one instance where a publicist for the film was very desperate to let a critic from Time Magazine into the film, which resulted in a rare line bypass exception. However, this left a disappointed Michael Phillips (of the Chicago Tribune and co-host of At the Movies). Phillips actually hung around at the front of the line until after the film started, before he finally went away.
Also quite busy was my public screening for the Chinese film The Warrior and the Wolf, which even had a talent party show up.
I am now finished volunteering until Friday, so starting tomorrow I will finally start checking out some films starting with George A. Romero‘s Survival of the Dead.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of TIFF, I will be revisiting one film from each year I attended the festival. Please be aware that these discussions may include SPOILERS. In 2006, I made the decision to begin volunteering for TIFF, while also beginning studying for a degree in Film Studies at York University. Since a perk of…
Last weekend, I attended Fan Expo Canada for the second time. It was overall an enjoyable experience, however this probably the year where many of the problems associated with the Expo reared their head. Probably the biggest problem with the Expo was the terrible crowd control. The Metro Toronto Convention centre was completely packed and…
It’s a little late, but here are this week’s DVD picks. My main pick for this week would be the Keanu Reeves-staring crime thriller Street Kings (also on Blu-Ray). I missed the film in theatres, though I wouldn’t mind checking it out. Also coming out is Prom Night (also on Blu-Ray), which is being advertised…
In what will most likely be my final purchase before the holidays (always need to save a few for my wishlist), yesterday I picked up Kevin Smith‘s Red State on blu-ray. The disc was released a couple weeks ago after a very successful roadshow release, which saw Smith tour along with the film and provide a…
It wasn’t until after seeing Juno that I decided to give Jasan Reitman’s first film a shot. I had skipped the film when it came out two years ago because I’m very anti-smoking and thought that it would be hard to sympathize with a character, whose goal was to shamelessly promote the habit. When I…
I like the mainstream as much as anyone, but this year was definitely a good read for independent films. 10. Adam Resurrected I can’t call it a memorable film, but it wasn’t a bad film either. 9. Hamlet 2 It did show some promise, but in the end it will only be remembered for “Rock…
