TIFF12: TIFF Docs Highlights
Previously known as “Real to Reel,” the documentary program at TIFF is going under the more unassuming name of “TIFF Docs.”
I’ve probably made it no secret that I have a growing love of documentaries and it should be said that my favourite film from last year’s festival was a doc.
There is a definitely a wide-variety of interesting subjects covered in this year’s line up of documentaries.

A perfect film for this year, this doc looks at the Ben Johnson controversy at the 1988 Olympics
The Act of Killing – Joshua Oppenheimer, Denmark/Norway/United Kingdom
Executive Produced by Errol Morris, the unrepentant former members of Indonesian death squads are challenged to re-enact some of their many murders in the style of the American movies they love.
Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story – Brad Bernstein, USA
A look into the life of the renegade children’s book author.
How to Make Money Selling Drugs – Matthew Cooke, USA
A look into both sides of the war on drugs.
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God – Alex Gibney, USA
A look into the ongoing controversies surrounding pedophilia within the Catholic Church.
Roman Polanski: Odd Man Out – Marina Zenovich, USA
An examination of the Roman Polanski‘s 2009 arrest
Storm Surfers 3D – Christopher Nelius and Justin McMillan, Australia
A 3D surfing doc. I’m in!
Those are my documentary highlights. The next wave of TIFF announcements will come next week and will include many of the Canadian films in the line-up.
