Previously known as “Real to Reel,” the documentary program at TIFF is going under the more unassuming name of “TIFF Docs.”
I’ve probably made it no secret that I have a growing love of documentaries and it should be said that my favourite film from last year’s festival was a doc.
There is a definitely a wide-variety of interesting subjects covered in this year’s line up of documentaries.
Here are the highlights:
9.79* – Daniel Gordon, United Kingdom
A perfect film for this year, this doc looks at the Ben Johnson controversy at the 1988 Olympics
The Act of Killing – Joshua Oppenheimer, Denmark/Norway/United Kingdom
Executive Produced by Errol Morris, the unrepentant former members of Indonesian death squads are challenged to re-enact some of their many murders in the style of the American movies they love.
Storm Surfers 3D – Christopher Nelius and Justin McMillan, Australia
A 3D surfing doc. I’m in!
Those are my documentary highlights. The next wave of TIFF announcements will come next week and will include many of the Canadian films in the line-up.

It’s that time again. The Golden Globe nominees have been announced and like last year, I will give some random thoughts on the nominations: No real surprises in the Best Picture (Drama) category. Though I would have also liked to have seen The Wrestler on that list. There are also no surprises in the Drama…

I am really late to the party giving my thoughts on the nominees for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, which were announced nearly a week ago. I suppose my delay comes from the fact that it is more apparent each year that the Golden Globes are far from a prestigious awards show, with the…
This 1992 comedy is the latest of my bargain bin acquisitions. In the film Joe Pesci, fresh off his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Goodfellas, plays a newly bared New York lawyer, who goes to a small Alabama town to defend his cousin on a false murder charge. The film also features Marisa Tomei in…
I may have already watched the week’s biggest new release, but that doesn’t mean that it will be an off-week for me. New Releases Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (July 7) – I’m finally going to catch up with this film, which sadly has a much more limited release in only its…
