Oscar Week ’09: My Favourite Non-Winners – The Shawshank Redemption

shawshank redemption posterThe Shawshank Redemption wasn’t really a huge box office hit when it came out in 1994, but after receiving seven Oscar nominations, the film quickly went on to be considered one of the best films of all time (it’s currently the number one top rated film on IMDb).

It can be hard to believe that this prison drama is based on a Stephen King novella (and it’s probably the first non-horror King adaptation since Stand By Me).

The film is centred around the performances headlined by and and is definitely a wonderful film.

Director Frank Darabont went on to direct two more King adaptations with The Green Mile in 1999 (which also received Oscar nominations) and The Mist last year.

The Shawshank Redemption is definitely a film you should check out at least once.
